In oil service industry, xanthan gum as a drilling polymer is mainly consumed as drilling fluids (drilling mud) chemical, as well as fracturing, pipeline cleaning, and work-over and completion, due to its’ extraordinary compatibility with sea salt, and resistance to temperature degradation.
Since 1973, Exxon firstly start to use xanthan gum in its’ formulated water-based drilling mud, xanthan gum’s powerful multi-purpose hydrocolloid property is widely developed. As today, xanthan polymer has been a most important chemical component in drilling chemical fields.
The pseudoplasticity of its solutions will carry low viscosity at the drill bit where shear rate is high and high viscosity in the annulus where shear is low. Therefore, xanthan would benefit a parallel function by enabling efficient penetration at bit in addition to suspending cuttings in the annulus.
